AFTERCARE FOR TONGUE

You are responsible for the care of your piercing. The tools and implements used on your piercing are completely sterile, If your piercing becomes infected you only have your self to blame. If you follow the instructions on this care sheet the likelihood of complications is minimal.

Your tongue should take anywhere from two to four weeks to heal. During that time your tongue will most likely swell an anti-inflamitory such as Advil, Motrin or Ibprofen  can be used to decrease the swelling. Ice can also be effective but don’t suck on it too much because the sucking action can cause additional swelling. You may develop a coating of the tongue and/or secrete a yellowish white substance from your piercing that will resemble a little ball, this is completely natural and will eventually go away.

For the first couple of days you should avoid eating solid foods. Due to the swelling of the tongue swallowing is very uncomfortable. Spicy foods should also be avoided as they my irritate your fresh piercing.

You should also avoid alcohol and tobacco products during the entire duration of the healing process. Since this rule is commonly broken please be sure to rinse your mouth (see instructions below) directly after using the substances mentioned. Keep in mind that alcohol will deteriorate your  regenerating skin cells which slows down the healing process and tobacco products cause excessive irritation to your fresh piercing.

You should avoid wet kissing and oral sex because you have a open wound in your mouth . Even between monogamous couples there is bacteria that can cause complications with your fresh piercing not to mention the array of communicable diseases that you will be more susceptible to.

You should wash out your mouth with Biotene or Tech 2000 (available at local pharmacy)  every time you put anything in your mouth other than water. You may also rinse your mouth once a day with a mixture of warm water and sea salt. Listerine can be used too but will cause your piercing to take a few additional days to heal.

Check the balls on your jewelry daily with freshly washed hands to make sure they are tight. The balls on your jewelry tighten when turned clockwise (to the right).

Keep in mind that your jewelry is harder than your teeth and can cause damage when bitten so be careful. You are responsible for your teeth, if you chip them you are to blame (not the shop).

Do not remove the original jewelry under any circumstance until it is completely healed (even if the piercing becomes irritated or infected). Please contact me if any problems occur or questions arise. In the case of a severe infection contact your physician and the Health department.

To prevent dental damage after the initial healing oral jewelry should be downsized to fit the individual. Consult me for a size that is right for you.
